Finding a training company is the next step. Vocational training in Germany combines classroom learning with practical on-the-job training. You’ll need to find a company offering an apprenticeship (Ausbildungsplatz). Look for apprenticeships on job portals, company websites, or through local chambers of commerce (IHK or HWK).
When you find a suitable apprenticeship, it’s time to apply. Your application typically includes your CV, a cover letter, and copies of your school certificates. Some companies might also conduct interviews or tests to select candidates. If you’re accepted, you’ll sign a training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) with the company. This contract outlines the terms of your apprenticeship, including duration, pay, and working hours.
Once you’ve signed the contract, you’ll enroll in a vocational school (Berufsschule). Your training will be divided between working at the company and attending classes at the vocational school. Your company usually handles the enrollment process for the vocational school.
Now it’s time to complete your training. Vocational training programs typically last between two to three and a half years. During this time, you’ll alternate between practical work and classroom learning. Stay dedicated, work hard, and absorb as much knowledge and experience as you can.
Midway through your training in many programs, you’ll take an intermediate examination (Zwischenprüfung) to assess your progress. This exam covers both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. As you near the end of your training, you’ll prepare for the final examination (Abschlussprüfung). This exam is conducted by the relevant chamber (for example IHK) and assesses your overall knowledge and skills in your field.
The final examination usually consists of a written test, a practical test, and sometimes an oral exam. Study thoroughly and practice your skills to ensure you pass this crucial step. If you pass the final examination, you’ll receive a vocational qualification certificate (Berufsabschlusszeugnis). This certificate proves that you have successfully completed your vocational training and are qualified to work in your chosen field.
